The first presentation of the third day of CinemaCon was Universal + Focus Features. With a massive slate at Universal with films from legends like Steven Spielberg and Christopher Nolan to Focus Features featuring auteurs in the making, it was a highly anticipated presentation.
To kick things off, Snoop Dogg delivered multiple songs with a perfect intro to announce his story being brought to the screen by Craig Brewer next year from Universal. Jonathan Daviss will portray the megastar in the film that will hit theaters in 2027. Snoop promises they’ll be back at CinemaCon next year with a trailer.
In the biggest move possible, Universal started their presentation with Christopher Nolan introducing a new look at The Odyssey, his highly anticipated follow up to his Best Picture winner, Oppenheimer. A beautiful montage of all of his previous iconic work leading up to the Oscar winner taking the stage discussing adapting this iconic story and bringing it to a new audience. Nolan said this film is a lifelong dream of his not just to bring the story to the screen but the manner in which they shot it completely on IMAX film for a perfect presentation. Nolan said the film is at its core a story about family and a man’s quest to return to his family; going on to say that Anne Hathaway, Matt Damon and Tom Holland are the heart of the film. The director said the film was an absolute nightmare to film, in the best way possible, and that Damon was his partner on the massive film. We got a first look at an extended scene with Damon and his followers sneaking inside the Trojan horse. The impeccable editing, pulsing score and sharp direction build such a tense experience to something you could say you know what happens yet you feel nothing but a sense of worry and dread. The Odyssey will hit theaters July 17th.
Naturally following up a new Nolan film, we had a beautiful intro with Jack Black being complimented as a true movie star (for Bowser in The Super Mario movies). It was actually such a sweet moment and Black is so deserving as he’s been a staple in cinema for so long. The CEO of Illumination took the stage alone to discuss their success with Mario and showcase the latest Minion film, Minions and Monsters. The film is set at the ‘birth of cinema’ and we got an exclusive first peak at an extended scene set on a train headed into Los Angeles with the titular minions up to no good with homages to Buster Keaton and John Ford. The film will release in theaters on July 1st.
Following up Minions, we were treated to a beautiful montage on the iconic romantic comedies of the studio urging us to save romance at the theater. That each year there are fewer and fewer romantic comedies and if we don’t act now, we won’t be able to save them. The montage led to a trailer for a new film starring Academy Award Nominee Monica Barbaro and Mr. Dua Lipa, Callum Turner in a fun premise film about finding someone with low expectations in One Night Only, hitting theaters on August 7th.
Transitioning to a completely different genre with Academy Award Winner Jessica Chasten in a terrifying film called The Other Mommy about a sort of doppelgänger figure haunting a family. The horror film will roll in theaters on October 9th. Violent Night 2 sleighing into theaters on December 4th, the wildly anticipated sequel starring David Harbour and Kristen Bell ups the ante with violence and Wham!
Ben Stiller came out to introduce another sequel, Focker In-Law, teasing he is not in The Odyssey and was backstage smoking with Snoop and Steven Spielberg. Robert De Niro came out to join Stiller on stage with amazing banter about who is the new De Niro (he says Ariana Grande) and Stiller teased they’d be back in fifteen years for a new film. We were treated to a trailer of the film and it looks like so much fun with Grande effortlessly fitting into this iconic family; it hits theaters this Thanksgiving.
Focus Features took the stage for their impressive slate with Georgia Oakley’s highly anticipated Sense and Sensibility starring Daisy Edgar-Jones will slide into theaters on October 16th. We received a first look at the hot adaptation. Presented in academy ratio, the film looks stunning with beautiful lighting and a swooning score, appears to be a sweeping adaptation worthy of a retelling.
The thing I assume you all came for from me is the first look we received at Robert Egger’s latest film and third film in his partnership with Focus Features, Werwulf. The film another Christmas release date will terrify audiences in the best way possible. Focus describes the film as his most terrifying to date and the look we received absolutely confirmed that. The film brings back some of his key Nosferatu players with Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Lily-Rose Depp, and Willem Dafoe. The teaser trailer showcased the visual style of Eggers in his signature 4:3 ratio with a hypnotizing capture of a village under paranoia of what nightfall brings. A VoiceOver telling us not to fear the darkness and what is coming. Aaron Taylor-Johnson and unrecognizable Lily-Rose Depp pleading for help as they’re told not to worry about a creature brutalizing the town. The teaser was short but brought back mystical tones featured in The Witch and The Northman as well as hallucinatory imagery from The Lighthouse and Nosferatu. Quick cuts of nightmarish filled blood and eerie woods, close ups of various townspeople convulsing and Taylor-Johnson foaming at the mouth. Eggers promising early one of his most visceral, brutal films to date, saying a lot with his filmography and that sound and visuals guarantees we will be seated.
Up next, Academy Award Nominee Colman Domingo was on hand to introduce first time CinemaCon attendee and MPA America50 Award recipient, Steven Spielberg. While he promised he’d be back with a new movie, he gave a passioned speech about how important theatergoing is for all types of movies and his personal growth within the theater as an audience member and a filmmaker. Domingo and Spielberg sat down for an intimate talk where the actor led a beautiful discussion about what attracts Spielberg to make original stories and his exploration of what’s out there in space. Domingo has always been an intuitive conversationalist but paired with someone as creative as Spielberg, it was such a special conversation about the industry, cinema, and how we see the world. This led to a first look at Disclosure Day, which the director said they’ve been strategic about what has been released to allow audiences to not be too spoiled for what is to come in the film and said all you really need is a seat belt. The film hits theaters on June 12th.
