Day two of CinemaCon wrapped up with the big presentation from Warner Brothers (hosted by Patton Oswalt). Following a monumental year with Sinners, Weapons, and One Battle After Another, the studio should have been flying high but given the negative aura of the looming Paramount acquisition, it was an interesting vibe heading in. The studio has a ton coming up with Tom Cruise, the conclusion of Dune, and Supergirl.
Warner Brother co-chairs Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy spoke came out first to rave about the success of the 2025 run that ended with a huge Oscar haul, including Best Picture. As they spoke about the success of these films with awards and audiences, they emphasized the importance of theaters and the communal experience of seeing movies. They not only thanked theaters for supporting their films and big swings but thanked audiences for showing up. The duo announced a focus on artistry driven films with a new division at Warner Brothers, Clockwork. The division’s first film, Ti Amo!, will come next year from writer/director Sean Baker.
They kicked off with a look at what to come in 2027 as a preview. Jack Black sent a video message to introduce the segment. M. Night Shyamalan via a video message talking about his upcoming film with Nicholas Sparks. Sam Esmail confirmed Panic Carefully, which stars Julia Roberts and Elizabeth Olsen, is the first IMAX digital release presented entirely in 1:43:1 aspect ratio. Other messages from Melissa McCarthy for Margie Claus, Cynthia Erivo for Bad Fairies, Nancy Meyers, Margot Robbie, the team behind Superman and ended on a tease of The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, which will be in theaters December 17, 2027.
Tom Cruise and Alejandro González Iñárritu came out to present a first look at their upcoming film, Digger. The Oscar winner pleased to tell attendees it was shot on VistaVision and needed to be seen on the biggest screen possible. Both spoke at length about how challenging the process was but how inspiring it was to work together and with the entire team. The film is tagged as a comedy of catastrophic proportions and that seems like an understatement. A wild Cruise accent, beautiful cinematography and wide lens shots, John Goodman as the President and Cruise sweet-talking to a cat. Digger will be in theaters on October 2nd.
Up next, we got a trailer for The End of Oak Street starring Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor… and a dinosaur? The film hits theaters on August 14th. We switched from dinosaurs into horror with a package for New Line Cinema with a package filled with upcoming releases, ending with Lee Cronin’s The Mummy, which hits theaters this Friday. We got a first look at the newest Evil Dead film with brutal kills from a dishwasher, car headrest, and obviously some fire in, Evil Dead Burn. The latest entry in the franchise will drop in theaters in July 24th. Then we got a new look at Mortal Kombat II, which will be in theaters May 8th.
We got an extended look at the upcoming animated The Cat in the Hat starring Bill Hader. The film is definitely for kids and dropping during the holidays in November, the perfect family outing. With wild hijinks, a plot around imagination and a funny sushi bit with a fish, surely a good time at the movies. Additionally, we got to see the new WB Animation intro, full of all the classic characters you know and love.
Moving on to DC Studios, we got the world premiere of the teaser for Clayface, which stars Tom Rhys Harries. Not familiar with the property but was appearing darker in tone and visual style compared to the James Gunn influenced films released under DC’s banner. The film will be released on October 23rd. Milly Alcock, director Craig Gillespie and Jason Moma were on hand to introduce a new look at the upcoming Supergirl film. The trio spent a long time speaking about the best day on set and working together on the standalone film for Alcock before showing us an extended clip. Supergirl will hit theaters June 26th.
Academy Award Winners Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock came out with a dramatic, worthy entrance to introduce a look at Practical Magic 2 and talk about midnight margaritas! They both spoke about it not feeling like shooting a sequel but returning to a home they shared together. Bullock making Kidman say ‘we come to this place for magic’ is a core memory and an iconic moment in CinemaCon history before a lengthy discussion about building the set and special days on set. The iconic duo showed us a special teaser trailer for what is to come. The highly demanded sequel comes to theaters on September 18th.
J.J. Abrams was on hand to discuss his return to the director’s chair with The Great Beyond, which he said he felt as he was writing he had to direct it and he’s so grateful to be part of this chapter at WB to tell original stories. The film has a massive cast with Glen Powell, Jenna Ortega, Emma Mackey, Sophie Okonedo, Merritt Wever, and Samuel L. Jackson. The Great Beyond will be in theaters in
And we wrapped up the WB presentation with a new look at Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Three. The Colosseum filled with Fremen, literally levitating, with the chant/song from the trailer filling the theater. Denis Villeneuve joked he travels with an entourage before thanking theater owners for supporting his massive vision. Moma, Zendaya and Timothée Chalamet were all on hand with the director to discuss the film that is set 17 years after Part Two. With Linus Sandgren behind the camera, the visuals are unreal and sweeping in a new point of view. We were treated to the first seven minutes of the film which focused on Paul’s army arriving into a new world. The tone is unreal as you can feel the human doubt seeping in the army of Paul and his promises 17 years after the last chapter. As they land and the rain falls on them, their doubt seemingly vanishes as his vision is true. Immediately, they’re met with insane fire power and the scope of brutality of war displayed is masterful, evoking Saving Private Ryan. The preview we saw after the extended opening shows Duncan Idaho telling Paul he’s beyond redemption followed by Chani asking Paul what it feels like to be human, one of the people. Dune: Part Three was described as epic and emotional, and what we saw absolutely delivered on that. The epic conclusion will release in theaters on December 18th.
