CinemaCon day three wrapped up with a presentation from Amazon MGM Studios. This was the first year Amazon MGM Studios hit Vegas for CinemaCon and while it would seem they had a lot to prove, I think they did. Amazon MGM Studios delivered one of the only studio presentations of the entire week not entirely focused on sequels, reboots or remakes. While the Amazon in their name may not ring entirely theatrical, they were determined to showcase why they are committed to the theatrical experience. Majority of their slate and announcements were for 2026 but they were some great trailers for releases this upcoming year.
Amazon MGM kicked off with a full trailer for Project Hail Mary, an adaptation of the best-selling novel by Andy Weir. From directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller starring Ryan Gosling and Sandra Hüller, Project Hail Maryfollows a schoolteacher turned astronaut to study solar dimming that could cause the extinction of the human race. While the trailer honestly gave away a bit too much plot wise, the scale of the film was breathtaking; the cinematography already as standout from Greig Fraser. The film hits theaters March 20, 2026, but already is a much-anticipated title from many.
Another book adaptation and 2026 release Amazon MGM presented is Verity, based on the novel of the same name by Colleen Hoover. Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett sent in a video intro with a teaser for the film described as a gothic, psychosexual thriller that follows famed author Verity Crawford (Hathaway), who is tragically injured after a horrific car accident. Verity’s novel that’s now due to go unfinished, her husband Jeremy (Hartnett) offers a struggling writer named Lowen (Johnson) a large chunk of money to complete the remaining books. Lowen accepts the writing gig but discovers a chilling secret in the work, an unfinished manuscript that hints at a dark admission about the Crawford family. Verity opens in theaters on May 15, 2026.
One of the best trailers debuted at CinemaCon this year belonged to Luca Guadagnino, Ayo Edebiri and Andrew Garfield with After the Hunt. The film, which also stars Julia Roberts as the lead, follows a group of college professors that are close until one brings an accusation against another. The ensemble includes both Michael Stuhlbarg and Chloë Sevigny in a film full of secrets and much more than meets the surface. The teaser ends with Roberts saying, “Not everything is supposed to make you comfortable.” After the Hunt could be one of the biggest awards players of the year based on talent involved but the trailer makes that feel much more certain. The film hits theaters on October 10th.
From awards pedigree to thrillers, the next film was an AI thriller, Mercy, starring Rebecca Ferugson, as an AI model acting as judge, jury and executioner, opposite Chris Pratt, who is accused of murder after helping develop the AI model. Pratt is on a bit of a ticking clock trying to prove his innocence while locked in a chair. While it looks a bit generic, the digital and single location aspect may make it feel a bit fresher. Up next was another thriller but this time an adaptation of a Don Windlow novella, Crime 101, with an all-star cast including Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Barry Keoghan, Halle Berry and Monica Barbaro. Director Bart Layton said he wanted to capture LA in a way we haven’t seen on screen before, and the film follows a thief committing crimes up and down the 101 freeway. The film looked like a call back to films of the early 00’s and truly shot acutally in Los Angeles.
Up next was a live-action animated hybrid film Three Bags Full: A Sheep Detective Movie starring Hugh Jackman alongside Emma Thompson and from writer Craig Mazin. The film is a whodunnit as the sheep investigate to find who murdered their shepherd. Three Bags Full: A Sheep Detective Movie is scheduled to be released on February 20, 2026. One of my favorite trailers of CinemaCon was up next from an off-Broadway director, Aleshea Harris, making her feature directorial debut with an adaptation of her own play, Is God Is. The film stars Mallory Johnson, Kara Young, and Vivica A. Fox in an Afro-punk, spaghetti western, and Greek tragedy type story exploring revenge. It looks insane, high energy and like a cannot miss in theaters. The film also stars Sterling K. Brown and Janelle Monáe and is produced by Tessa Thompson.
With many films in production or about to start production, Amazon MGM had messages from a few stars plus a behind-the-scenes look at another film to keep us enticed for what is to come. The Thomas Crown Affair is the next film from director Michael B. Jordan, and he was on location beginning to work on the film, which will feature costumes from Academy Award Winner Ruth E. Carter. Mahershala Ali had left CinemaCon and was moving on to set for his next film, Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother from director Bassam Tariq. A behind-the-scenes featurette was shown for Masters of the Universe from director Travis Knight speaking at length about how he wanted to do this project right as a passion project that honors the toys and cartoons.
Amazon MGM wrapped up with star power of Ben Affleck, Jon Bernthal, Cynthia Addai-Robinson, and Daniella Pineda alongside their The Accountant 2 director Gavin O’Connor. While The Accountant 2 has already screened and is about to release. Affleck and Bernthal have such amazing chemistry, it was so fun to see them going back and forth before introducing a new look at the film.
