CinemaCon 2024: Warner Brothers

The first full day of CinemaCon just ended in Vegas with a presentation from Warner Brothers celebrating their very big (and pink) success in 2023, their great start in 2024, the full year ahead, and even a peak at 2025.

The presentation began with a look at one of the most anticipated films of the year, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, with stars Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth alongside co-writer and director, George Miller. The trio were on hand to discuss the filming process and to introduce an exclusive look for the CinemaCon audience. Taylor-Joy said about the prequel long in the making, “this is the story of one woman’s commitment to unrelenting hope.”

The new footage was broken up into 3 parts with different title cards.

  • Her Odyssey Begins
  • The Warrior Awakens
  • Ride into Revenge

The footage covered a young Furiosa to a young adult as she yearned for revenge on Dementus (Hemsworth). The film looks massive in scale with colorful set pieces, breathtaking visual effects, and strong performances. The film will have its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival and be released into theaters on May 24th.

Up next was a peak at the directorial debut from Ishana Night Shyamalan, The Watchers. While a teaser had been released earlier this year, the horror fantasy film was given a full-length trailer exclusive to CinemaCon audiences allowing for a deeper look at the project. The trailer allowed for more of the story to be front and center exploring how Dakota Fanning’s character ended up in the enclosure. The film releases exclusively in theaters on June 14th.

The CinemaCon audience was then treated to a glimpse of the new Superman logo and a message from James Gunn on set on the 2025 film. This led into a trailer for the documentary, Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story, which had its world premiere at Sundance earlier this year. The film was then acquired by DC and will be released later this year in theaters.

Kevin Costner was then on hand to not only discuss the long process of bringing Horizon: An American Saga to the screen but introduce new footage of both parts releasing this summer. The Oscar winner spoke about the extremely long creative process of writing the films and bringing them to theaters exclusively. The actor/director/producer was then honored with a CinemaCon Visionary Award, highlighting his accomplishments as a writer, director, and actor. The first installment of Horizon: An American Saga opens on June 28th and the second installment opens on August 16th

Another Oscar winner hit the CinemaCon stage with Bong Joon-ho on hand to present the first trailer for the highly anticipated Mickey 17. He spoke at length about updating the novel to be adapted to the big screen. The writer/director spoke about how the film is not truly a sci-fi film, but a human story. Star of the film, Robert Pattinson, then joined on stage to discuss playing multiples of the same character in the film. CinemaCon audiences were then exclusively treated to the trailer set to “Ain’t That a Kick in the Head.” Mickey 17 looks high on the comedy (with another incredible Pattinson accent) and each member of the cast seems to have an incredible time. The film is set to release in early 2025.

M. Night Shyamalan was up next on the CinemaCon stage to tease his next film TRAP, coming out later this year. He spoke about the need he feels to create “the most provocative, unusual experiences” that can only be truly experienced in a theater. The trailer for the film has quite the reveal with Josh Hartnett in what appears to be quite the meaty role. TRAP is expected out later this year.

Say his name three times and Beetlejuice will appear! Michael Keaton, Tim Burton, Willem Dafoe, Monica Bellucci, Justin Theroux, and Catherine O’Hara were all on hand to give a new look at a new sequel to the massive 80s hit. The production value is breathtaking with impressive prosthetics, beautiful sets, wild hair and makeup, and performances that look on par with what we love about the original. The film will release in theaters on September 5th.

And saved for last, Todd Phillips was on hand to introduce the trailer for another sequel, Joker: Folie à Deux. The director thanked theater owners for not bowing down despite the conversation around the first film’s release before discussing the star that is Lady Gaga, what attracted him and Academy Award Winner Joaquin Phoenix back to the story of Joker, and if the film is really a musical. The trailer was premiered for CinemaCon audiences before dropping online. The film will release exclusively in theaters on October 4th
