It’s officially 2024 and while we’re in the thick of award season honoring the best films of 2023, there are plenty of new films coming this year that we’re excited for! From films that were pushed out of 2023 by delays to new films we don’t even have a teaser for, here are just some of the films we are looking forward to in 2024.

Nosferatu (Dir. Robert Eggers)

Nosferatu is easily my personal most anticipated film of 2024. Robert Eggers has a particular vision and style to his films that perfectly will fit the story originally told in 1922 by F. W. Murnau. The film has an incredible cast from Bill Skarsgård, Lily-Rose Depp, Emma Corrin, Willem Dafoe, Nicholas Hoult, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson. The film will be released by Focus Features on December 25, 2024.

The Actor (Dir. Duke Johnson)

André Holland stars as the titular actor who loses his memory after being beat almost to death in the 1950’s. The Actor is the solo directorial debut from Duke Johnson, who co-directed Anomalisa. The film’s ensemble features Gemma Chan, Toby Jones, and Tracey Ullman. Neon is distributing the film and no release date has been confirmed.

Bird (Dir. Andrea Arnold)

Andrea Arnold is back with a new crime drama being released by A24. Bird stars Barry Keoghan and Franz Rogowski. The film, which was shot by Robbie Ryan, was filmed in the summer of 2023, and has no release date confirmed.

The Front Room (Dir. The Eggers Brothers)

Robert Eggers isn’t the only Eggers with a film anticipated to release this year. His brothers, Max and Same, are making their feature debut with The Front Room, based on a short story. The film stars pop sensation Brandy (!!) and the legendary Kathryn Hunter. The logline reads, “a young, newly pregnant couple who are forced to take in an ailing stepmother who has long been estranged from the family.” Sounds like a horror film and we can’t wait! A24 is distributing the film in the US and has not confirmed a release date.

Humane (Dir. Caitlin Cronenberg)

Directing runs in the Cronenberg family and photographer Cailtin Cronenberg is making her directorial debut with Humane. The horror film stars Jay Baruchel, Emily Hampshire and Peter Gallagher and takes place over a single day. Humane is set after a global environmental collapse, with world leaders forced to take extreme measures to reduce the earth’s population… murder? The film has no release date confirmed.

Kind of Kindness (Dir. Yorgos Lanthimos)

Following up their latest collaboration, Yorgos Lanthimos and Emma Stone reunite again with Kind of Kindness. The film also co-stars Margaret Qualley, Willem Dafoe, Joe Alwyn, Jesse Plemons, Hong Chau, and Hunter Schafer. The film will be released by Searchlight and is pending a release date.

Love Lies Bleeding (Dir. Rose Glass)

Kristen Stewart? Lesbian romance-thriller? Set in the 80s? Directed by Rose Glass? COUNT US IN! Alongside Stewart will star Katy O’Brian and Ed Harris in a film that is set to premiere at Sundance in January. The A24 film will release on March 8, 2024.

Dune: Part Two (Dir. Denis Villenueve)

Austin Butler and Timothée Chalamet are officially set to throw down in IMAX on March 1, 2024. While we should have seen the second installment already, Denis Villenueve’s second half of Dune is finally coming! The Zendaya starring film will have new actors in its impressive ensemble including Léa Seydoux, Florence Pugh, and Christopher Walken.

Joker: Folie à Deux (Dir. Todd Phillips)

Personally, I didn’t love Joker, but you get Lady Gaga in the mix and I’m there! Joker: Folie à Deux is set to open in theaters on October 4, 2024 with Academy Award Winner Gaga starring as Harley Quinn alongside Academy Award Winner Joaquin Phoenix returning as the titular clown.

Mickey 17 (Dir. Bong Joon-ho)

Robert Pattinson is going back to space in Mickey 17. The follow up to Parasite for Bong Joon-ho will follow as Pattinson sets out to colonize the ice world, Niflheim. The film also co-stars Naomi Acki, Toni Collette, Mark Ruffalo, and Steven Yeun. Warner Brothers is set to release Mickey 17 on March 29, 2024.

A Different Man (Dir. Aaron Schimberg)

Sebastian Stan stars in this thriller as an actor who undergoes facial reconstruction and becomes obsessed with another actor (Adam Pearson) who is playing him in a play. Renate Reinsve also stars in the film set to premiere at Sundance in January. A24 has yet to confirm a release date for the film.

Challengers (Dir. Luca Gudagnino)

Directed by Luca Guadagnino starring Zendaya, Mike Faist, and Josh O’Connor. Enough said! The film follows the threesome (literally?) and was supposed to premiere in 2023 at the Venice Film Festival. The film now is set to release on April 26, 2024. The teaser kicked into gear showing off what promises to be a dark, complex drama set in the world of tennis.

Twisters (Dir. Lee Isaac Chung)

Never thought we’d get a sequel to one of the most iconic Bill Paxton Helen Hunt films, but Twisters is coming! And this highly anticipated sequel is the follow up to Minari for Lee Isaac Chung with an all-star cast including Brandon Perea, Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell, Anthony Ramos, Daryl McCormack, Maura Tierney, Harry Hadden-Paton, Kiernan Shipka, Nik Dodani, David Corenswet, and Tunde Adebimpe. Universal will release the film on July 19, 2024.

Hot Milk (Dir. Rebecca Lenkiewicz)

Rebecca Lenkiewicz is best known as a screenwriter but makes her directorial debut with Hot Milk. The film, adapted from the novel of the same name, stars Emma Mackey as she travels to Spain to visit her mother (Fiona Shaw) and she meets a new friend on the way (Vicky Krieps). The film currently has no release date.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (Dir. George Miller)

It’s a Mad Max world and we’re just living in it! George Miller is back and this time with a prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road starring Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth. The teaser premiered a few weeks ago and the hype has only intensified since. The film will drop exclusively in theaters on May 23, 2024.

Blitz (Dir. Steve McQueen)

Steve McQueen jumps back into narrative films with Blitz. The film stars Saoirse Ronan, Harris Dickinson, Erin Kellyman and Stephen Graham and is set during the Nazi occupation of Amsterdam during World War II. Apple will handle the US distribution and the film is pending a release date.

The Brutalist (Dir. Brady Corbet)

I’ve had this film on my last two anticipated lists and hopefully this is the year it truly comes out. Brady Corbet’s follow up to Vox Lux stars Adrien Brody, Guy Pearce, and Felicity Jones. The Brutalist follows as a man and his family emigrate to the US following the Holocaust. The film currently has no distribution or release date.

Flint Strong (Dir. Rachel Morrison)

Barry Jenkins adapted a documentary about a professional boxer Claressa “T-Rex” Shields training for the 2012 Summer Olympics and Academy Award Nominated Cinematographer Rachel Morrison is making her directorial debut with the project. The film stars Ryan Destiny, Judy Greer, and Brian Tyree Henry. MGM is scheduled to release the film on August 9, 2024.

I Saw the TV Glow (Dir. Jane Schoenbrun)

Jane Schoenbrun’s follow up to We’re All Going to the World’s Fair is set to premiere at Sundance in January. Their next film has a jam-packed cast, including Justice Smith, Brigette Lundy-Paine, Helena Howard, Danielle Deadwyler, Amber Benson, Ian Foreman, Michael Maronna, Conner O’Malley, Emma Portner, Danny Tamberelli, Phoebe Bridgers, Lindsey Jordan, Fred Durst, Haley Dahl, Jonathan Chacko, and Kristina Esfandiari. A24 has not yet announced an official release date.

The Legend of Ochi (Dir. Isaiah Saxon)

In Isaiah Saxon’s directorial debut, a young girl runs away from home and learns how to communicate with an animal species, the Ochi. The A24 film stars Helena Zengel, Willem Dafoe, Emily Watson, and Finn Wolfhard. Saxon has previously directed music videos for Björk and Grizzly Bear, so you can check out his unique vision to get ready! The film has no set release date.

Lisa Frankenstein (Dir. Zelda Williams)

The trailer states, ‘from the writer of Jennifer’s Body,’ and we could not be more back. Academy Award Winner Diablo Cody writes a new script for director Zelda Williams which appears to be a teenage girl take on Frankenstein. The film stars Kathryn Newton as Lisa (!!) and Cole Sprouse as her monster. Focus Features will release the film on February 9, 2024.

Maria (Dir. Pablo Larraín)

After El Conde, Pablo Larraín jumps back into his leading lady biopics with Maria. Angelina Jolie stars as Maria Callas and the film will follow her final years living in Paris. Steven Knight, who wrote Spencer, wrote the script for the film and it co-stars Valeria Golino and Haluk Bilginer. There is currently no release date and no distributor behind the film.

MaXXXine (Dir. Ti West)

A movie we see ‘where is the trailer’ tweets about every single day should finally be released in 2024. The third installment in the Mia Goth starring trilogy, MaXXXine, will take us to Los Angeles in the 80s. Alongside Goth, Michelle Monaghan, Elizabeth Debicki, and Kevin Bacon co-star in what should be a wild ride. A24 will distribute and there is no current release date.

Mother Mary (Dir. David Lowery)

Stepping away from the fantasy world, David Lowery dives into the world of celebrity and pop culture with Mother Mary. The film, distributed by A24, stars Anne Hathaway, Michaela Coel, and Hunter Schaefer and features original songs from Jack Antonoff and Charli XCX. The plot is mostly being kept under wraps and the film has no set release date.

Oh, Canada (Dir. Paul Schrader)

Jacob Elordi and Richard Gere star in the next Paul Schrader film alongside Michael Imperioli and Kristine Froseth. Based on the novel, Foregone, the story follows the life of a tormented writer who fled the US to Canada to avoid the Vietnam War draft. Elordi will play a younger Gere in flashbacks. The film currently has no release date or distribution.

The Shrouds (Dir. David Cronenberg)

What was once supposed to be a limited series for the iconic filmmaker was since updated to be a full-length feature film. David Cronenberg says this supernatural drama is more personal and autobiographical than some of his more recent work. The Shrouds stars Vincent Cassel, Diane Kruger, Guy Pearce, and Sandrine Holt. It currently has no release date or distribution.

Polaris (Dir. Lynne Ramsay)

Lynne Ramsay not only has a new film ready to go starring Joaquin Phoenix and Rooney Mara, but the film is her first original screenplay since her debut, Ratcatcher, in 1999. Polaris, which currently has no distribution or release date, is rumored to be a horror film set in Alaska.
