CinemaCon 2024: Paramount

The last day of CinemaCon just kicked off in Vegas with a presentation from Paramount celebrating their iconic brand, legendary partnerships, and an incredible slate of new films to come. Paramount kicked off with an incredible intro video with footage from the first Gladiator with a voiceover asking about shortened theatrical windows and nine movie trailers and ads met to a thumbs down from Academy Award Winner Joaquin Phoenix. Then Roman soldiers march on stage with Paramount’s President of Distribution in a chariot to greet the CinemaCon audience. If it wasn’t clear this was going to be a big day for the highly anticipated Gladiator Two, the room was vibrating with excitement leading up to the first ever footage of the Ridley Scott sequel.

The presentation kicked off with a new trailer for John Krasinski’s If. Krasinski was still in London finishing up the film, but sent a sweet video to introduce the trailer and speak to the massive success theaters had with A Quiet Place as we’re going to later see footage of the prequel film. If stars Ryan Reynolds, Cailey Fleming and Steve Carell. The film centers around a matchmaking service that pairs abandoned imaginary friends with new kids. If opens in theaters exclusively on May 17th.

Paramount CEO Brian Robbins stepped out to walk us through upcoming films either about to head into production, in development, or being announced for the first time. Most of this was quickly discussed and no footage was shown for any of these films. Damien Chazelle’s new film will hit theaters in 2025 and the Academy Award winner is writing, directing and producing. Ridley Scott is confirmed to direct The Bee Gees movie. The Running Man is being rebooted and will be directed by Edgar Wright coming next year, starring Glen Powell. A GI Joe and Transformers crossover is coming to theaters soon. A new, original musical from South Park’s Trey Parker and Matt Stone with Kendrick Lamar. A reboot of Scary Movie is in the works to come in 2025. We will also get a reboot of The Naked Gun with Liam Neeson next year. Paramount is also in works on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin as a live-action feature with an R-rating.

Up next, Chris Hemsworth and Academy Award Nominee Brian Tyree Henry were on hand to show us a trailer at their new animated film, Transformers One. The film stars Hemsworth as a young Optimus Prime and Henry as a Megatron alongside an all star cast including Scarlett Johansson, Keegan-Michael Key, Steve Buscemi, Jon Hamm and Laurence Fishburne. CinemaCon audiences were also treated to an extended scene with 3D glasses from Transformers One. The clip showed the characters sneaking abroad a train and getting a gorgeous look of the surface of their planet. The animation style is a bit underwhelming, but the story and cast seem thrilling.

Robbins came back out with an announcement of Rihanna, the voice of Smurfette in the upcoming Smurfs movie, writing and producing original music for the film that she will also perform. They also announced quite a bit of the cast for Smurfs in addition to Rihanna, including James Corden, Nick Offerman, Hannah Waddingham, and so many more. Robbins then announced an animated franchise for Avatar fans with the first being Aang: The Last Airbender, which will be hitting theaters from the original creators and Dave Bautista voicing the villain. A new SpongeBob film was announced with the original voice actors as upcoming for Paramount.

Academy Award Winner Lupita Nyong’o was joined on stage by Joseph Quinn to introduce a new look at A Quiet Place: Day One. The new footage was much more in depth as we not only see the massive scale of the film set in New York as the creatures first hit earth but also more of the characters. Seeing Nyong’o and Quinn’s characters meet for the first time and have both sweet and terrifying interactions. Nyong’o was already considered an icon in the horror world after her incredible performance in Us, but this looks like it’ll cement her in the genre. Quinn looks like he gets to do some incredible physical and emotional work in this terrifying film. I wasn’t that excited for this film before, but this new trailer looked so much more immersive in the world and story that will be told. A Quiet Place: Day One will release in theaters on June 28th.

CinemaCon audiences were then treated to some brief footage of Sonic the Hedgehog 3. The footage highlighted Jim Carrey mostly and we got a glimpse of Shadow. Robbins said this will make for a different kind of ‘blue Christmas,’ as the film releases on December 20th in theaters. We were then terrified by a new trailer for Smile 2 starring Naomi Scott as a pop star who is hounded by smiling fans….which we all know is absolutely horrifying in the world of Smile. The scale of the sequel looks massive in comparison to the first and it will release exclusively in theaters in October.

And finally…Paramount saved the best for last with an exclusive look at Ridley Scott’s Gladiator Two. Before they showed the audience five minutes of incredible footage of the highly anticipated sequel, we were given a video intro from Scott, Academy Award Winner Denzel Washington, Academy Award Nominee Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, and Connie Nielsen to discuss not only the scale of the project but the excitement of working on the film. It was really heartwarming as a fan of films to see the love and passion the team for the project itself. We were told the film is still being worked on in post so the footage was unfinished, but oh man, it is breathtaking, brutal, and epic, epic, epic. Mescal is absolutely ripped, but his presence certifies we will see a movie star born in Gladiator Two. Not only does he appear to have emotional moments throughout the footage, but he’s seen covered in blood, fighting monkeys, and yes, in the Colosseum dueling. Washington is having the time of his life in this footage and I cannot wait to see more of him in this meaty role (with already iconic hoop earrings). Pascal and Nielsen look absolutely stunning as they have more subtle emotional beats and you can just feel the depth of what will unfold in the full film. Quinn absolutely stole the show for me. Not only is he blonde but he is deliciously evil with a sinister giggle and smile as he clearly picks up where Joaquin Phoenix left off. Quinn will clearly have the biggest year of his career and establish himself as a king of the blockbusters. Not only are there sharks (yeah, SHARKS) and rhinos in this, but it seems will see Mescal and Pascal go head to head. Gladiator Two will be released exclusively in theaters on November 22nd.
