Awards for the in competition films of the 76th Cannes Film Festival were announced live in Cannes at the Grand Palais Theater over the weekend. Many award season pundits and enthusiasts do view the Cannes Film Awards as the first official precursor for this year’s awards season. While the Cannes Prize Winners don’t have a huge overlap with the Oscars, there is some… It’s a great place to see early contenders that can hold on to buzz all year or bring buzz back again at the end of the year. Just last year, the Palme d’Or winner Triangle Of Sadness went on to receive a Best Picture nomination and two additional Oscar nominations for Director and Original Screenplay, while the Grand Prix co-winner Close received a nomination for Best International Feature alongside the Jury Prize co-winner EO.
The jury selecting the winners for this year’s In Competition awards included Jury President Ruben Östlund, Paul Dano, Julia Ducournau, Brie Larson, Denis Ménochet, Rungano Nyoni, Atiq Rahimi, Damián Szifrón, and Maryam Touzani.
This year’s In Competition included About Dry Grasses, Anatomy Of A Fall, Asteroid City, Banel & Adama, Black Flies, A Brighter Tomorrow, Club Zero, Fallen Leaves, Firebrand, Four Daughters, Homecoming, Kidnapped, La Chimera, The Pot-Au-Feu, Last Summer, May December, Monster, The Old Oak, Perfect Days, Youth (Spring), and The Zone Of Interest.
